After concluding the Fourth Intergovernmental Conference of the process of Biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (IGC4), at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Greenpeace pointed out that the governments of 48 countries gathered they failed to agree
a global treaty that protects the oceans, beyond national waters.
The purpose was to provide comprehensive protection to marine ecosystems against the growing impacts of human activities in the ocean and climate change. But, Greenpeace environmentalist Ornela Garelli pointed out, the opportunity to protect at least one-third of the world’s oceans by 2030
and asked the delegations to meet again this year and not delay any longer
in reaching an agreement that allows us to create a network of marine sanctuaries in international waters
.
In a statement, he pointed out that although Mexico -one of the 48 countries that make up the High Ambition Coalition- has been essential to push the conclusion of the treaty this 2022
the government must increase its ambition to achieve a global agreement that limits extractive activities, such as underwater mining, excessive industrial fishing, oil exploration and plastic pollution.
The organization seeks the adoption of a Global Treaty that helps countries achieve the 30×30 objective; that is, protect at least 30 percent of the ocean surface by 2030.
