Unemployment rate drops to 11.2% in January, says IBGE

The unemployment rate in the country was 11.2% in the quarter ended in January this year. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the result is the lowest for the period since 2016 (9.6%).Unemployment rate drops to 11.2% in January, says IBGE

Data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD) were released today (18).

In the quarter ended January 2021, the rate was 14.5%. Also according to the IBGE, the rate observed in the quarter ended in January this year was below that observed in the quarter ended in October 2021 (12.1%).

The unemployed population stood at 12 million people, 6.6% below the previous quarter (858 thousand people less) and 18.3% below the quarter ended in January 2021 (2.7 million people less).

The employed population in the country reached 95.4 million, up 1.6% compared to October (1.5 million more people) and 9.4% compared to January 2021 (8.2 million more).

The level of occupation, which is the percentage of employed persons in the working age population, was estimated at 55.3%. The result is 0.7 percentage points higher than in the previous quarter (54.6%) and 4.3 percentage points higher than in the same period in 2021 (51.1%).
