Two years after Covid-19, Costa Rica is stronger

“In truth, these have been extraordinary times, very difficult times, with many decisions, many sacrifices, with much to do in many fields,” said Alvarado, at the ceremony for the second anniversary of the arrival of the pandemic in this country, held in the capital’s Children’s Museum.

Costa Rica has shown that it is a small but well-organized country and that this pandemic was an effort by the entire country, he said, adding that we have to continue to strengthen it.

During the activity, they screened a documentary that covers the 730 days that have elapsed since March 6, 2020, when the Minister of Health Daniel Salas reported the detection of the first two cases of the disease, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. , a couple of American tourists.

Likewise, sanitary measures such as the sanitary vehicle restriction, the call to stay at home, teleworking, border closures, suspension of activities and the closure of mass concentration centers to reduce the spread of the virus.

Despite this, two years after that event, the entire country mourns the death of some 8,100 people and almost 820,000 confirmed cases.

The pandemic has had serious economic and social implications, the documentary refers, but in the face of this, the entire country came together to get ahead: the Government, the Legislative Assembly, private companies, social sectors and civil society, to guarantee access to health, education and feeding.

At another point, the documentary highlights that on December 23, 2020, Costa Rica became the seventh country in the world to receive a vaccine against the virus and a day later the immunization of the population began.

Official data shows that until February 28, 81.3 percent of the total population of the country – estimated at just over five million 161 thousand inhabitants – had received their first dose, that is four million 195 thousand 968 people.

In addition, he continues, 74.1 percent of the population, that is, three million 827 thousand 352 people already had the complete protection scheme (two doses) and 326 thousand 215 had a third portion, considered here as reinforcement.

“I feel extremely proud of Costa Rica, because it stood and remains firm and has shown that it can move forward in the face of this and many other adversities and do things well,” said Alvarado.

This pandemic -he pointed out- has been a teaching of the confidence that we must have in ourselves that we can overcome this type of difficult dilemma and make Costa Rica an example country worldwide.
