This Thursday, the national coordinator of the Southern Macrozone Unit, Pablo Urquizarconfirmed that from the Government they will seek the renewal of the constitutional state of exception before the change of command.
“The President has told us that he is going to govern until the last day, the state of emergency ends on March 11 and the powers to extend it are within the period of President Pinera. Therefore, the decision has been made precisely to present to Congress the extension of the state of emergency, in such a way that it is the democratically elected Congress that also supports the measure,” said the coordinator.

Urquízar defended the measure pointing out that acts of violence in the area have decreased. In addition, he criticized the future administration, which has already stated that they will not request further extensions of the state of emergency in the south.
“It is a complete contradiction with what is happening not maintaining the state of emergency and why it is a contradiction, no one doubts that in the southern macrozone and especially in the Biobío and La Araucanía regions there is an exceptional situation and when they exist, measures are required. exceptional,” he said.
“In no other part of Chile is there terrorism, what corresponds and is not an option, but a duty, is that the State put all the tools at its disposal to protect the Mapuche and non-Mapuche families that live in the area”, he added.
He also questioned the future government on the basis for not continuing with the measure.

It should be noted that last Tuesday the extension of the state of emergency in the north was published in the Official Gazette. It is expected that the Government in the next few hours will send the renewal letter to Congress on the southern macrozone.
