The Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed this Wednesday the first two cases in Panama of the BA.2 sublineage of the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Lourdes Moreno, national head of Epidemiology of the Minsa, announced that these two cases were reported by the Gorgas Memorial Institute.

“Right now we are facing the expectation of seeing that these people have been isolated cases and not a community spread as has been the case with Omicron BA.1,” Moreno said in TVN’s morning news.

The official explained that so far in other countries it has been seen that it has greater transmissibility, but that it is not known how severe the disease can be with this sublineage.

“Many studies have been done, however the World Health Organization has asked countries to handle it very cautiously and seeing it as one more variant of concern,” he stressed.

The Minsa has not yet given further details of the people who were confirmed with the Ómicron BA.2 sublineage, regarding the traceability of the cases.

Moreno reiterated the call to the population to maintain biosecurity measures, especially with the use of the mask.
