The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Alexandre de Moraes, ordered the lawyers of the former President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, to present to the Court an official document, from the United States government, to prove that Bolsonaro was formally invited to the inauguration ceremony of US President Donald Trump.
“I determine that Jair Messias Bolsonaro’s defense presents an official document, in accordance with article 236 of the CPP [Código de Processo Penal]which effectively proves the coexistence described in your petition”, ruled Moraes, in a decision announced this Saturday (11).
The minister’s decision is a first response to a request from the former president. Yesterday (10), Bolsonaro’s defense requested that the STF authorize the return of Bolsonaro’s passport so that he can travel to the United States between January 17th and 22nd, in order to attend Trump’s inauguration, scheduled to take place on 20th, in Washington.
According to Moraes, when requesting the release of the passport, Bolsonaro’s defense did not present elements that prove the reason for the trip abroad. “Before analysis [do mérito da solicitação]there is a need for additional evidence, as the request did not come properly accompanied by the necessary documents”, points out the minister.
Bolsonaro had the passport seized in February 2024, within the scope of Operation Tempus Veritatis, of the Federal Police (PF), which investigates an alleged criminal organization suspected of acting to carry out a coup d’état and abolish the Democratic Rule of Law in Brazil with the aim of obtaining advantages of a politics, keeping the former president in power. Since then, the politician’s defense has tried to retrieve the document on at least two occasions, but their requests were refused by minister Alexandre de Moraes.
Until the publication of this report, the Brazil Agency had not been able to contact Bolsonaro’s defense.
