Employers' Confederation disagrees with labor reform

The Employers’ Confederation of the Dominican Republic (COPARDOM) issued a statement this Thursday in response to the presentation of the labor reform project by the Ministry of Laborwhich he considered to be misguided in this situation where the National Congress is immersed in constitutional and fiscal reforms and will know the General Budget of the Nation for 2025.

The president of the COPARDOMLaura Peña Izquierdo, explained that although the business entity recognizes and values the tripartite dialogue that took place in the Labor Advisory Council, that organization insists on the need to achieve a balance between the modernization of labor laws and the protection of workers. workers’ rights.

He stated that the Employers’ Association focused its proposals on three main axes: procedures, working hours and costs derived from the employment relationship. job“These are crucial to updating outdated labor legislation and returning competitiveness to Dominican companies, allowing them to achieve higher levels of efficiency in an increasingly competitive market,” he said.

Peña Izquierdo said that one of the key points for COPARDOM is the modification of the unemployment regime because the current regime reduces the competitiveness of companies, limits their development opportunities, slows down the increase in salaries and the generation of formal jobs, especially in micro and small businesses, where the impact of layoff can put the survival of the productive unit at risk.

He indicated that COPARDOM reiterates its commitment to the creation of inclusion, well-being and formal employment, and ensures that its proposals respect the acquired rights of workers. However, the entity expressed its concern about certain points of the project presented by the Ministry of Labor which, in his opinion, deserve further discussion and consensus.

Finally, he stated that the COPARDOM calls for the good sense of the government and the workers to generate a climate of development that benefits the entire Dominican Republicseeking a balance between labor modernization and the protection of workers’ rights. COPARDOM considers it appropriate to wait for the processes of modification to the Constitution, the tax reform and the budget to conclude to address the labor issue.
