Some 150 children with severe hearing loss who were rescued from the world of silence and from living as deaf-mutes are now studying and leading a normal life, thanks to cochlear implant surgeries performed by the Social Security Fund (CSS).
Dr. German Conte, an Otorhinolaryngologist from the CSS Cochlear Implant Program, spoke with journalist Judith Peña on Radio Panama, where he pointed out that the patients treated who have managed to recover their hearing through the placement of cochlear implants have had a radical change in their lives, both in their studies and socially.
A team of health professionals works in a multidisciplinary way to ensure that children with severe hearing loss can integrate into society after performing cochlear implant surgery, giving them a world full of hope.
To place a cochlear implant, it is recommended to do so before the age of 5, since better results can be obtained; from 5 years onwards, neuronal plasticity occurs where these auditory pathways are lost.
He explained that surgery does not do the magic alone, the child undergoes surgery and the implant is turned on a month later.
