German airports hit by climate activists reopen

Agencies;- German airports that were raided on Thursday by climate activists from the ‘Letzte Generation’ or “Last Generation” have resumed normal operations, hours after members of that organization stormed the premises of these facilities.

According to the Berlin Police, two people entered the premises at the German capital’s airport, known as BER, and stuck to the runway, but were removed thanks to the actions of the airport’s emergency services and firefighters.

“Flight operations at BER Airport are not affected,” Berlin police said in a message posted on their X social media account.

The Federal Police had the same message regarding Stuttgart airport, where two activists from the ‘Letzte Generation’ also broke into the airport, according to the local daily ‘Stuttgarter Zeitung’.

German media also reported that, following the intervention of law enforcement, the airports of Cologne-Bonn (west), where officials indicated that there could be delays, and Nuremberg (east) were able to resume their activities.

Karlsruhe airport (southwest), which was also initially reported to have hosted protests by the group, was not affected on Thursday by the activists, who did stage a protest there on Tuesday without impeding the normal operation of the infrastructure.

In a statement to which EFE had access, the ‘Letzte Generation’ called for protest actions at airports, in which they asked, among other things, for the abandonment of fossil fuels.

Thursday’s actions come after activists infiltrated Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s largest, three weeks ago, prompting the cancellation of 230 flights and the opening of an investigation into charges of coercion, property damage and breaking and entering.
