The USS Maine was a second-class battleship of the United States Navy. She achieved world fame after her explosion on February 15, 1898 in the bay of Havana.
This event ―in the framework of the Necessary War (1895-1898) that the mambises were winning against the kingdom of Spain― served as a pretext for the United States to declare war against Spain and end up appropriating the Spanish colonies Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines.
