Nicaragua protests the declaration at the EU-CELAC summit that condemns the war in Ukraine

USA to Ortega: "Instead of forcing opponents into exile, they should stop the persecution"

The Nicaraguan government protested Tuesday against a declaration issued during the EU-CELAC summitwhere the concern of the participating States about “the war in Ukraine” was expressed.

In a release of the Nicaraguan Foreign Ministry, signed by Foreign Minister Denis Moncada, emphasizes “that the European Union has broken all the procedures and mechanisms established by democratic organizations, going over the rules”, since the declaration “does not have consensus, since that Managua did not sign it, nor approved it”.

Managua has been a strong opponent of questioning the Russian invasion of the Ukraine and holds a speech aligned with Vladimir Putin that points to a supposed “denacifization” in the area.

The declaration contains a footnote where it is stated that the declaration was endorsed by the countries present, with a single exception for disagreeing with one of the sections.

Former Nicaraguan Ambassador to the OAS Arturo McFields considered on Twitter that Ortega “preferred to die with his boots on in slavish defense over Putin’s war against Ukraine” by not signing the statement.

The III Summit of the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) brought together leaders and dignitaries from 60 countries in Brussels.
