Colombian Medical College rejects possible revalidation for Venezuelan community doctors

In this second week of July, a “technical table” was held in the Colombian Congress with Venezuelan community doctors; the Ministries of Education and Health; the Venezuelan Embassy in Bogotá, and Colombian universities, to discuss the validation of their titles

The Colombian Medical Association rejected the claim to validate titles of “Community Comprehensive Physicians” (MIC) of Venezuela so that they can practice in the neighboring country, as evaluated in the Colombian Congress, which has already carried out multiple work groups aimed at achieve that action.

The main concern lies in the academic training, according to the College, because it is deficient and precarious.

The organization explained that their curricula do not meet the high training and professional standards required to practice medicine, which also means that the MICs do not have adequate learning or the necessary skills to carry out appropriate medical interventions following international standards.

«The danger to which we refer is related to the fact, also true, that the academic training – theoretical, practical and technical – of the MICs is very deficient and precarious, since their curricula, unfortunately, do not meet the high training demands and professionals that a medical professional requires”, read a statement issued by that organization.

In this sense, the Colombian Medical Association pointed out that the MICs were designed “in another health, social, political and economic context”, which is very different from the reality of the Andean nation.

“The same Venezuelan National Academy of Medicine has sent communications to the Colombian Ministry of Education in which it explains that the learning and skills of Comprehensive Community Physicians are very different from surgeons or doctors of medical sciences from universities with traditional programs in Venezuela” , detailed the agency.

In this second week of July, Senator Robert Daza, from the leftist Polo Democrático Alternativo party, published a tweet in which he said that a “technical table” was held in Congress with the MIC; the Ministries of Education and Health; the Venezuelan Embassy in Bogotá, and Colombian universities.
