A group of parents and representatives led by the civil initiative Por La Familia Venezolana protested in front of the Ministry of Education in order to reject a new curriculum that includes, within its contents related to sexual education, the diversity of sex and gender.
With banners that highlight messages such as “don’t mess with my children” and “for a sexual education based on the truth and not on an ideology”, the protesters argue that the national educational system tries to implant the so-called “gender ideology” in the student population from an early age.
The spokeswoman for Por La Familia Venezolana, Linda de Márquez, calls for the “eradication” of these contents from the educational curriculum and the books authorized by the Ministry of Education.
“We ask that it be eradicated. I think that there is nothing salvageable here because everything is based on ideology and not from biology. The Constitution establishes that science is of public interest and this has to be based on science. We ask that all ideological content in the bibliography also be eradicated », he reasoned in statements taken by El Pitazo.
This group considers sexual diversity as an “ideology” and demands that it be excluded from maternal, preschool and primary education, considering that these contents represent an “element of confusion” for students.
“It is an element of confusion that we do not want children to be told, because scientifically, biologically, only two sexes are verifiable. We don’t want to be told that they can be one thing or another because this is an ideology. It is an adult decision, they should not involve children in this, “insisted de Márquez.

Despite the claims, comprehensive sexual education —which is applied normally in many parts of the world— is practically a myth in Venezuela. The country’s schools and high schools have set aside this topic.
According to the Venezuelan Association for Alternative Sexual Education (Avesa), this is because there are no public policies that promote compliance with the laws that regulate the right to sexual education in the country.
Although this changed slightly with a resolution in the Official Gazette No. 42,063, published on February 5, 2021, which ordered offering children and adolescents knowledge that “allows them to develop skills and healthy lifestyles with a positive vision of their sexuality.” », the focus continues to be from a biological point of view, ignoring other fields of study that have significantly advanced theoretical frameworks that address sexuality from social and psychological points of view.
