The murder of the peasant Darwin Rostrán, the story of a crime against humanity in Mulukukú

The history of Nicaragua from 2018 to date, under the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, is full of abuse, violence, and crimes against humanity that remain in impunity.

One of them is the torture and execution of a young farmer in a wild rural area of Mulukukú, Nicaraguan North Caribbean. His name was Darwin Ezequiel Rostrán Polanco, he was 24 years old and was cleaning a property with a machete when death arrived aboard a police patrol.

A police statement, one of those that bordered on cynicism and the implausible since April 2018, gave an account of the crime with such coldness that it seemed written by Goebbels himself, who was a liar propagandist for the Nazi party.

murdering «a delinquent»

The regime police note reported that Darwin Ezequiel Rostrán Polanco died at 11:00 in the morning on August 10, in the community «The Tiger»twenty kilometers from the town of Mulukukú.

According to the police narrative, a patrol was executing a warrant for the peasant’s capture, but when he was supposedly surrounded, he opened fire on the police. «The criminal, upon being discovered by a police patrol, attacked fellow policemen with firearms, who repelled the attack, resulting in the death of the subject Darwin Ezequiel Rostrán Polanco, with a criminal record of illegal possession of firearms and rustling»reads the statement.

Then, according to the statement, Ortega’s agents seized an AK 47, along with four magazines that allegedly belonged to one of the three police officers who died two months earlier, during an assault on a Mulukukú police station.

On Monday, June 11, 2018, while police, paramilitaries, and fanatics of the dictatorship carried out crimes throughout Nicaragua against the population that was protesting against the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo, an armed assault took place at the community police station. Sislao Paraska, Pueblo Nuevo region, Mulukukú.

At least 10 armed men arrived at the post, a small wooden house, without electricity, at dawn and stormed the site.

According to the version of an alleged survivor to the official media, the alleged assailants would have fired at the station while shouting cheers to the mayor of Mulukukú, Apolonio Fargas Gómez.

The assailants killed two policemen and kidnapped another, Petty Officer Martín Sánchez, whose body was found days later on a neighboring farm. The dead police officers were identified as Dixon Bismark Soza Henríquez and Carlos Zamora, both non-commissioned officers.

In addition, Captain Ramón Zavala and Petty Officer Leonardo Castillo were injured.

Police revenge in Pueblo Nuevo

The police immediately blamed the liberal mayor along with 16 people, among whom Darwin Ezequiel did not appear.

«The investigations carried out by the National Police determine that these terrorists are the intellectual and material authors of the cowardly attack on the Sislao Paraska Community Police Station, Pueblo Nuevo Region, an event that occurred on June 11, 2018, committing crimes of Terrorism, Organized Crime, Murder , Hostage Taking and Illegal Possession of Firearms»says the statement.

On July 25, Apolonio Fargas and other former employees of the Mulukukú mayor’s office were arrested and presented the following day in the official media in Managua as responsible for the assault in Pueblo Nuevo.

Subsequently, according to complaints from the Mulukukú community to the Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights (CENIDH), The police and the army launched a joint repression operation in search of weapons that led many peasants to flee to the mountains for fear of being captured or killed.

tortured and executed

Darwin Ezequiel’s family denied the entire police version from start to finish. During a visit to the CENIDH headquarters In Matagalpa, the relatives of the young farmer told their version of the crime and accused the police of the murder of their relative.

Initially, the regime’s police captured Darwin Ezequiel Rostrán Polanco alive in the El Tigre region, twenty kilometers from Mulukukú, where the peasant was working as a day laborer, clearing land with a machete.

Then, according to the complaint from the victim’s family, the young man was tortured and executed. «The other farm workers who hid saw everything; first the army surrounded the area and then the police arrived pointing AKs at everyone»said a relative of the victim.

According to the story, the policemen were looking for the policemen’s weapons in that area where the farmer was working.

According to the version, when he saw the police, the peasant wanted to hide in a corral, but he was detected and captured. «Darwin put his hands up, but he had the machete in his hand, perhaps out of nerve he did not throw it away, so they shot him in the knees and on the ground they began to kick and butt him»reads part of the testimony of the relatives.

According to the images and testimonies, there were signs of torture all over his body and traces where he was handcuffed with both hands. A relative of the victim said that Darwin was brutally tortured, shooting him in various parts of his body before executing him with a bullet to the head.

«They hit him twelve bullets. He has a bullet in the knee, another in the leg, another in the waist, another above the waist, another in the nipple that came out through his ribs, he has a shot on the left side that came out on the other side and he has another shot in the head that shattered his skull, they also took out his tongue, it seems that with a tong»lamented the relative of the victim, who asked for protection due to the threats he received along with his family, today in exile.

The peasant’s body was handed over by the Police on Saturday, August 11, wrapped in a sheet in a hammock. The agents threatened the family by taking photos, their personal information and fingerprints.

They told them «there is that dog», «that is the delinquent that killed our companions» and? «That’s why they went an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth».

Hours before the delivery of the body, according to local complaints, supporters of the government party shared horrendous images of Rostrán Polanco’s body on social networks.

He appeared still alive lying in a bloody puddle, tied with handcuffs, with a grimace of pain on his face, with his entrails exposed and with an AK rifle by his side, a bandolier as a shirt and shooting magazines by his side.

The peasant’s relatives indicated that they cannot explain how the regime’s police involved his relative, because he never participated in the protests in Mulukukú, nor did he participate in the attack on the police post in Pueblo Nuevo on June 11, nor was he seen at the Mulukuku dam.

Nor did they show any bullet holes against the police patrol; nor to any injured policeman or witnesses in the area who confirmed the version that the victim opened fire. The peasant’s funeral ceremonies were held on the same Saturday that the body was delivered.

In a tense atmosphere of fear and pain, with patrol cars and police guarding the scene, in the rain, the young man’s family and a few neighbors buried the young man in a rustic coffin made of uncured pine boards.
