This Saturday, June 16, President Nicolás Maduro called on countries and their governments to combat consumerism and avoid the “excessive” exploitation of natural resources, in order to commemorate this Sunday, June 17, the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought.

“The problems of desertification and drought affect development and global socioeconomic stability, if we want to reverse this serious situation we must join forces to combat consumerism and the excessive exploitation of natural resources,” said the ruler in a message posted on his account on Twitter.

For its part, the Ministry of Ecosocialism (Environment) also published a message, on the same social network, in which it urged citizens to “become aware of these natural phenomena and promote ecological actions that guarantee a healthy and sustainable future.” .

On its website, the United Nations explains that “droughts are among the greatest threats to sustainable development, especially in developing countries, although it is true that more and more rich nations are affected.”

“The number and duration of droughts have increased by 29% since 2000 and, as of today, there are more than 2.3 billion people who suffer from problems due to water scarcity,” the UN detailed.

The forecasts, says the agency, estimate that by 2050 droughts will affect more than three quarters of the population worldwide.
