An NGO estimates that 909 people have been tried or convicted since the 9/11 demonstrations in Cuba

(EFE).- The organization Justicia 11J reported this Wednesday that, since the anti-government demonstrations of July 11, 2021 (11J), a total of 909 people have been tried or sentenced in Cuba.

In its May update, the group of activists added that 1,845 people have been detained for political reasons since those protests, which will be two years old in 2023.

Justice 11J assured that the incarcerated people are distributed in seven prisons in the country.

The NGO added that since the mobilizations of the summer of 2021 -the most numerous in decades- it has registered another 236, 33 of them so far in 2023.

In its report last April, the NGO Prisoners Defenders -based in Madrid- raised the number of political prisoners on the island to 1,048, of which 35 are under 18 years of age.

The Cuban Attorney General’s Office reported last year on the prosecution of 790 people in relation to 11J, 55 of them between 16 and 17 years old

The organization specified that in April 24 new names were added to its list, while another 42 “left” having already served their sentence.

The Cuban Attorney General’s Office reported last year on the prosecution of 790 people in relation to 11J, 55 of them between the ages of 16 and 17 (the minimum criminal age in Cuba is 16).

During his visit to the island at the end of May, the high representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, affirmed that the delegation of the European bloc and the Cuban government discussed the “situation created, before, during and after” the 11J.

Next November, the EU special representative for human rights, Eamon Gilmore, will visit Cuba to follow up on the situation of those sentenced for 9/11.
