Iranian ruler Ebrahim Raisi will visit Cuba for the first time since he took office

MIAMI, United States. – The ultra-conservative cleric Ebrahim Raisi, president of the Iranian regime, will travel to Cuba next week with the aim of strengthening economic, political and scientific relations with the “friendly country”, according to a report from the EFE news agency.

The tour, which also includes visits to Venezuela and Nicaragua, is Raisi’s first trip to Latin America since he took office in August 2021.

According to the Iranian state media IRNA, quoted by EFE, the Latin American tour of the Iranian leader will begin on Sunday, with Raisi leaving Tehran. The ruler will be accompanied by a “high-ranking delegation” on his visit to the three countries, destinations to which he was invited by their respective dictators.

Iran It has maintained strong ties with Cuba, based on their mutual support for the Venezuelan regime and their shared opposition to the United States, which has imposed sanctions on both countries. Last year, Tehran and Havana agreed to strengthen their cooperation in the areas of technology and food security, which was seen during the visit of Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Ricardo Cabrisas to Iran.

Relations between Iran and Latin America have intensified in recent years, especially with Venezuela and Nicaragua, whose rulers have explicitly endorsed Iran’s policies. These visits to Latin American countries mark a shift in focus for Raisi, who until now has been focused on strengthening relations with Iran’s neighbors.
