The police chief of Montevideo, Mario D’Elía, acknowledged that the criminals who assaulted and Supermarket manager murdered daddy in Parque Rodó “are still unidentified“.
The hierarch’s statements come after the Interior Ministry reported last week that it had arrested a person suspected of committing the crime, although hours later the man was released.
Since Monday May 29, when the crime of Marcelo Demestoy56 years old, the Police carried out raids and made “several” arrests, D’Elía reported at a press conference.
However, he still could not find the whereabouts of the criminals – there were two of them, one entered the premises and the other remained outside watching – nor with the motorcycle they used to carry out the robbery at the supermarket located in Maggiolo and Figueira.
“Several arrests were made, we have carried out many searches regarding this fact (the homicide of the person in charge). They are still unidentified,” said the Montevideo police chief. D’Elía assured that the Police are working on the issue together with the Homicide prosecutor in charge of the case, Adriana Edelman.
“We have elements that we have been collecting but you will understand that we are still under investigation,” argued the chief.
Homicides for “criminal conflict”
D’Elía was also consulted about the homicides that have taken place in recent weeks.
“The President of the Republic has said it: it worries us and it occupies us. We are working on resolving all these facts. Most have to do with criminal conflict between gangs“, he pointed.
He was also consulted on the situation in Spanish Villawhere the authorities should deploy Republican Guard and Tactical Response Group officials after a shooting occurred this weekend that left two injured: a 67-year-old man, who was shot in the chest and foot, and a 20-year-old man who was wounded in the chest.
“There are operations underway and operations that have already ended. Many raids were carried out, in some I even participated. There are seized vehicles, formalized people and merchandise was seized. The area is being worked on in a context in which a few criminal acts of different kinds have occurred“D’Elia said.
“For now we do not have much more to contribute except that we have not had, except for the incidents and the homicide the other day, other facts that we are not in a position to handle for now,” he said.
