MIAMI, United States. — The governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, launched this Wednesday his candidacy for the nomination by the Republican Party for the 2024 elections in the United States.

The 44-year-old politician presented the documentation to run for president in 2024, thus entering a contest that will face him face to face with former President Donald Trump.

De Santis will make the announcement at night during a conversation with Elon Musk via Twitter Spaces and will be moderated by David Sacks, a technology entrepreneur close to the South African magnate.

DeSantis is expected to hold fundraisers this week and hold a rally next week in Dunedin, the West Florida town where he grew up, outside of Tampa.

With the governor of Florida, there will be eight candidates for the Republican nomination for the 2024 elections: former President Trump; Senator Tim Scott; former US Ambassador to the UN and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley; Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchison; billionaire biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy; fellow businessman Perry Johnson; political commentator Larry Elder; and politician and businessman Rolland Roberts, son of the West Virginia senator of the same name.

Also expected to compete for the Republican nomination is former Trump Vice President Mike Pence.

For analysts and experts, DeSantis will be Trump’s biggest threat in the face of obtaining the Republican nomination, although polls conducted at the end of April indicated a wide advantage of 10 percentage points at the national level for the former president.
