In two of those campaigns he was instrumental in Norwich City’s promotion to the Premier League, the top level of English football, and has also played on loan for UK teams Brimingham City and Middlesbrough.
At 30, Onel has been a regular starter in coach David Wagner’s formations, after he took charge of the team last January.
During the current season the Cuban striker has had 40 appearances in matches of all competitions in which his team participates, in which he has signed two goals and distributed five assists.
By extending his contractual relationship, Onel said he was grateful for the opportunity he has received and with the support of coach Wagner, and the institution’s sports director, Stuart Webber.
“The last five years have been the best I’ve had in football. The city, the people, the fans, the club, the teammates I’ve had, there’s nothing in my career that I can say is better,” said the footballer.
Onel has the privilege of being the only player born on the Island who has scored a goal in the FA Cup, the oldest soccer tournament on the planet. He succeeded in January 2020, when in the 28th minute of the match he struck goal during his team’s 4-2 win over Preston, then in the second division.
In addition, his is also the honor of being the only Cuban who has participated in the highest division of English soccer and scored in that tournament, against nothing more and nothing less than the powerful club Manchester United, although Norwich City lost on that occasion for 1-3.
At the national team level, Onel fulfilled the dream of wearing the Cuban squad’s jersey from the first moment the island’s sports authorities gave the green light to the call for players who, on their own, were hired in different professional leagues on the planet. .

Since then he has been called on several occasions to integrate the team that is now directed by the coach from Pinar del Río Pablo Elier Sánchez, and of which he has been its captain.
Onel emigrated to Germany at only six years old, together with his mother and sister to live with his stepfather, who was the coach of Tus Westfalia Neuenkirchen.
Thanks to him, and the encouragement he gave his stepson, Hernández managed to make his debut in the German second division in 2010 with Arminia Bielefield. He then went through Werder Bremen under-23 and the Wolfsburg second team, until signing for Eintracht.
