Culture belongs to the Brazilian people and needs to be respected, says minister

The Minister of Culture, Margareth Menezes, said this Wednesday (29) that the country’s culture belongs to the Brazilian people and deserves respect from public agents. The statement was made during the inauguration ceremony of the sign that identifies the facade of the headquarters building of the folder, on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, in Brasília.

“Brazil stands out in the world for the culture it has. And this culture cannot be that of the government, it belongs to the Brazilian people and thus it has to be respected”, he said. Extinct by former President Michel Temer in 2016, the Ministry of Culture was recreated by President Lula in one of his first government actions.

“Culture represents a possibility for social and economic development and for strengthening the identity of our people,” he declared.

The first lady, Janja Lula da Silva, highlighted the resistance of the Brazilian cultural sector, especially in the difficult times of the pandemic. “The Ministry of Culture is back because the people who make culture in this country, the culture workers, bravely resisted 6 years of oppression, despite attempts to make culture invisible and to criminalize culture.”

Future

For the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, a country without culture has no future. “The transformation of a people, which has a civilizing base of respect for human rights, respect for dignity, respect for life, is also based on a strong, creative, productive, free culture”.
