Cuban actor Rubén Breña dies at 70

Cuban actor Rubén Breña died this Thursday in Havana at the age of 70, official media reported. The artist died after spending several days in intensive care at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital due to complications derived from erosive gastritis.

A few days ago and after publications on social networks by friends close to the artist who denounced the lack of medicines to treat Breña, the official press echoed an unusual note from the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital where it was clarified that this health center had ” with everything you need for your care.

“From the first moment the patient has all the treatment required for erosive gastritis with the application of the drug Omeprazole bb 20 mg, according to the action protocols,” read the note that caused outrage among Cubans due to the severe crisis of shortage of medicines that the island’s health system has been experiencing for more than two years.

According to the note, the actor had arrived at the hospital “in broken health.”

Breña, known mainly for his dissimilar characters in dramatized series on Cuban television, was born in Pinar del Río in 1953.

“Incredible, but true: Rubén Breña is in intensive care of Ameijeiras, he needs Omeprazole and vitamin K (not orally) and there is none,” the actor and television director Rolando Chiong denounced a few hours before the official publication.

Breña, known mainly for his dissimilar characters in dramatized series on Cuban television, was born in Pinar del Río in 1953. In the early 1970s he graduated from the National School of Theater Direction of the Ministry of Culture and became part of of the theater groups Zafarrancho and Trotamundos. In addition to theater and television, he worked in film and radio.

His performances are remembered on television in dramatic works such as Tierra brava, Historias de Fuego, When the water returns to the earth and Going out at night. According to the official Cubadebate outlet, Breña painted “in an empirical way and was fond of music and poetry.”

“Rest in peace, friend, man and actor. One day, one day. The good ones die, the screwed up continue to screw up and live. That’s why the hell, I don’t regret what I say every day,” he wrote on Facebook, from the United States , the actor Erdwin Fernandez upon learning of Breña’s death.

Among the official recognitions that Breña received while alive, the Actuar Award for the Work of Life awarded by the Performing Arts Artistic Agency in 2019 stands out.
