All the March 21st since 2011 the World Down Syndrome Daya date chosen to raise awareness about this condition and the lives of people who carry it throughout the world.
Down syndrome is a genetic alterationa “caused by the eexistence of extra genetic material on chromosome 21 which translates into intellectual disability.” what’s wrong with it a prevalence of “between 1 in 1,000 and 1 in 1,100 newborns”details the United Nations Organization (UN) in his web page.
From the organization they indicated that “People with Down syndrome tend to have more health problems in general,” but they stressed that thanks to “Social and medical advances” have been achieved “to improve the quality of life of people with the syndrome.”
“At the beginning of the 20th century, it was expected that those affected live less than 10 years. Now about 80% of adults who have it are over the age of 50,” highlighted United Nations.
To inform and raise awareness about the syndrome both the UN and the official page of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD for its acronym in English) promote the campaign “Many socks”which invites people to wear colorful socks and different pairs on March 21.

“Believe it or not, socks make people talk!” read on the official page of the day. The idea of the campaign is that when someone else sees the socks they can “Start a conversation”.
“When people ask you about your socks, you can tell them: ‘I wear them to raise awareness for Down syndrome'”for later “tell them everything you want them to know about Down syndrome”details the WDSD website.
The UN chose to lead its campaign for this day with the phrase “With us, not for us”with the objective of “leave behind the obsolete charitable model of disability” that “treated people with disabilities as objects of charity”.
“A human rights-based approach considers that persons with disabilities They have the right to be treated fairly and have the same opportunities as everyone else, working with others to improve their lives.”indicates the UN on its website.
