Amid criticism by members of the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to the basic interest rate, the Selic, currently at 13.75% per year, the Economic Affairs Committee of the Senate (CAE) approved, this Tuesday (14), an invitation to hear the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, on the subject. At the request of the Central Bank advisory, the hearing was scheduled for April 4th.
On another front, the CAE also approved a request for former members of Lojas Americanas to provide clarification on the company’s debts, estimated at R$ 43 billion, and which resulted in the company’s request for judicial recovery. Among the guests are former directors of Americanas Miguel Gomes Pereira Sarmiento Gutierrez, Anna Christina Ramos Saicali, José Timotheo de Barros and Marcio Cruz Merelles and former CEO of the company Sergio Rial.
Also invited to participate in the hearing, scheduled for March 28, were the president of the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban), Isaac Sidney Menezes Ferreira, and the president of the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM), João Pedro Nascimento.
As this is an invitation, none of them are obliged to attend.

As is traditional in every beginning of the Legislature, this Tuesday the Infrastructure Commission also approved invitations to hear several ministers about programs in their portfolios. The Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, should speak about the forecast for cell phone coverage and 5G internet in the country. Simone Tebet, Minister of Planning and Budget, of the basic structure of cities. Luciana Santos, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, of the country’s technological infrastructure. Márcio França, from Ports and Airports, and Renan Filho, from Labour, will handle the actions of their portfolios over the next two years.
The Regional Development Commission (CDR) also approved invitations to hear ministers. The collegiate approved requests to know the plans for the next two years of Daniela Carneiro, from Tourism; Jader Filho, from Cities, and Waldez Góes, from Integration and Regional Development.
The dates for the authorities to attend the Infrastructure and Regional Development commissions have not yet been defined.
