He Republic President Luis Lacalle Pou revealed what is your “carrot” to get to March 1, 2025when it must hand over power and make way for a new government.
“The first that I see myself is in La Paloma, a few meters from the sea and a long time in the sea“, the president confessed in an interview with Underlined. For several years Lacalle Pou surf and the images with a board on the beaches of Rocha became a tradition every summer.

“I’m going to tell you a secret,” he told Blanca Rodríguez at one point in the interview. “One day you stop being president, abruptly. And with that something that the Presidency gives you is withdrawn, which is power, formally. That day you no longer have it. I always liked that simile that one has to seize power, because it is an obligation. You have to have the ability to let go,” reflected Lacalle Pou.
“My idea is to see if I can transform power into authority. What is intellectual respect, affection, moral consideration and the ability to interpret the present and the future of Uruguayans,” he continued, noting that he would like to have “some authority.”
And in case the 2025-2030 government is from the coalition, he assured that he would like to “bother the president who is elected as little as possible”.
Regarding the possibility of being a candidate again in 2029, Lacalle Pou said that he would like the decisions he makes in the future to be “by choice and not by necessity“.
“I wish there was someone else updated, younger if possible, with a more current vision for 2029. Next door I will be militating and accompanying, “he said.
