There are 1,625 defendants for human rights violations

In Venezuela, crimes linked to human rights violations fell by 38% from 2018 to 2022, Attorney General Tarek William Saab said on Friday.

The head of the Prosecutor’s Office asserted that “a police officer knows, at this moment, that if he commits a human rights violation, the full weight of the law will come upon him.”

He explained that during 2018, 13,234 cases related to human rights violations were opened, while in 2019 11,461 were initiated, which represents 13% less.

He indicated that in 2020 there were 9,746 processes for crimes of this type (15% less than the previous year), and that in the years 2021 and 2022, open cases reached 8,237 (15% less) and 8,177 (1% less), respectively.

Saab added that a total of 1,625 people have been charged for violations of basic guarantees, although it did not detail the period covered by this figure.

He indicated that, also, 1,842 defendants have been achieved for crimes related to human rights violations, as well as 860 deprived of liberty and 392 convicted.

The prosecutor described these figures as “unpublished in Republican history”, and assured that they speak of “a concern and an occupation on such a sensitive issue.”

“This is the response of the Public Ministry of Venezuela, on behalf of the Venezuelan State, to the International Criminal Court (ICC),” he said, according to the letter.

Recently, the ICC prosecutor, Karim Khan, asked the Preliminary Questions Chamber of this body for authorization to continue with the investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed in the Caribbean country, after it was suspended at the request of the State. Venezuelan.
