Lula flies over areas affected by heavy rains in Sao Paulo

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvahas flown over this Monday the areas hardest hit by the strong rains that have caused at least 36 deaths and 40 disappearances on the coast of the state of Sao Paulo.

The president interrupted his days of rest in the state of Bahia to, accompanied by several of his ministers, see in situ the havoc caused by the intense rainfall last weekend in various locations in Sao Paulo.

“Flying over the region hit by the rains, in São Sebastião. Now I am meeting ”with the governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, the mayor Felipe Augusto and“ ministers of our Government to work together and face this crisis ”, Lula wrote on her social networks.

More than 500 people, including police officers, firefighters and members of the Armed Forces, are participating this Monday in the rescue and identification work of the victims.

The most affected municipality is Sao Sebastiao, where 35 of the 36 deaths have been registered, according to the latest official balance. The other fatality was registered in Ubatuba, also on the coast of Sao Paulo.

According to the official count, the strong storm has forced more than 2,400 people to leave their homes due to floods and landslides that have buried and damaged homes in the region.

This catastrophe has taken place in the middle of the Carnival festivities, during which the cities on the coast of Sao Paulo receive a large number of tourists.
