NGO: Israeli airstrike leaves 15 dead in Syrian capital

In the early hours of Sunday, February 19, a bombardment was recorded in Syria that left 15 dead. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the attack hit a ten-story building, where some ministries, security agencies and intelligence agencies are based.

An Israeli bombardment in Syria left at least 15 dead early Sunday morning and seriously damaged a building in the Damascus neighborhood where security and intelligence agencies are located, reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (OSDH).

“Sunday’s bombing is the deadliest Israeli attack on the Syrian capital,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the OSDH, an organization based in Britain and using a wide network of sources inside Syria. Among the victims are a woman and several civilians.

According to the OSDH, “Israeli missiles targeted sites” used by Iranian militias and Lebanese Hezbollah.

The attack hit a 10-story building near the Iranian Cultural Center in the Kafr Sousa neighborhood, where some ministries, security agencies and intelligence agencies are based.

Since the start of the war in Syria in 2011, Israel has launched hundreds of bombardments against the neighboring country, targeting especially army posts, Iranian militias and Hezbollah, which are allies of the Syrian regime.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense reported that the shelling occurred at 00:22 (22:22 GMT on Saturday).

“The Israeli enemy carried out an air assault from the occupied Golan Heights against various areas in and around Damascus, including residential neighborhoods,” it said in a statement.

According to an AFP correspondent, at the entrance to the attacked building there was a crater and the streets were littered with rubble and windowpanes.

The OSDH reported that another missile attack hit a warehouse of Iranian militias and Hezbollah fighters on the outskirts of Damascus.
