Voracious police in December: More than 5 thousand fines in a week

The “hunt” for drivers and the application of fines in Nicaragua does not stop. The agents of the National Traffic Security Directorate (DSTN) of the Police, at the service of the Ortega Murillo regime, filled out and signed a total of 8,453 fines from January 30 to February 5, more than 1,200 fines per day.

According to Senior Commissioner Edgard Sánchez, deputy director of National Traffic, the fines applied are “related to the main causes that cause traffic accidents with victims such as speeding, lane invasion and drunk driving.”

In this same period, the police institution seized 7,571 vehicles, including motorcycles, vans, cars, buses, and trucks. Of that total, 395 motorcycles were used.

Of the 8,453 fines applied in seven days, 101 were for drunk motorcycle drivers who were transferred to police units; Another 1,607 motorists were fined for driving without a protective helmet.

Deaths in traffic accidents increase

This week there were 841 collisions, there were 16 people dead and 34 injured. Deaths increased by two compared to the previous week when 14 deaths were reported and the number of injuries decreased by four, according to the weekly report of the “National Road Emergency Plan” of the Ortega Police Transit Directorate.

“Of the 16 people who died, 7 are drivers, 5 pedestrians, 4 passengers, the main causes being 7 drunkenness, 6 speeding, and 3 pedestrian recklessness,” explained Senior Commissioner Edgard Sánchez.

Traffic police in Nicaragua are accused of asking drivers for “bites” to avoid giving them a fine. Also, in various viral videos on social networks, the corrupt behavior of some officers has been documented.
