Chile stagnates in the 2022 Corruption Perception Index: it scores 67 points since 2017

Transparency International (TI) published the results of the 2022 Corruption Perception Index, which revealed that Chile has stagnated at 67 points since 2017, being the second country in Latin America and tied with the United Arab Emirates.

The study ranks countries’ corruption from zero, “very corrupt,” to 100, “very clean.” In this sense, in the last 10 years since the study was published, most countries have failed to stop corruption and some have even gotten worse.

In first place in America is Canada with 90 points, and in Latin America Uruguay is first with 74 points, followed by Chile with 67 points. Regarding the nations with the worst score, are Venezuela and Nicaragua with 14 and 20 points respectively.

Regarding the case of Chile, the study notes that the country “has been stagnant for years, despite the clear importance of addressing the growing organized crime and insecurity in the country, which are among the public’s greatest concerns.”

Despite the above, “in Chile, the constitutional reform process as well as the first National Integrity Strategy present a unique opportunity to strengthen accountability, modernize public institutions and improve trust in the State,” the study indicates.

TI’s regional advisor for Latin America, Luciana Torchiaro, told efe that “big changes not only happen from above, but also from below. Success in the fight against corruption depends on all sectors, all of us, contributing our grain of sand”.
