Sixteen people died this Sunday when a building collapsed in Aleppo, the second largest city in Syria, authorities and local press said.
The collapse, which occurred at 3 (21 on Saturday in Argentina) while the residents of this five-story building were sleeping, was due to “water leaks” at the base of the building, according to the official agency Sana.
Seven families lived in the building, according to the Ministry of the Interior, some 35 people according to the neighbors.
Rescue workers and firefighters continued this Sunday to search for the missing among the rubble, in this neighborhood with a Kurdish majority, according to a cable from the AFP agency.
According to the Sana agency, the balance rose to 16 dead, and four injured people were rescued. The previous balance was 13 deaths.
The Kurdish press agency Anha gave a provisional balance of 12 dead, including five children.
The collapse of residential buildings is frequent in Aleppo, due to illegal and poorly done construction, or because of the cracks caused by the fighting in this city during the Syrian war, AFP reported.
