A 22-year-old man disappeared in the water of the Nueva Carrara quarry and is wanted by Police and Fire personnel, reported FM Gente and confirmed The Observer. The authorities were notified around 2:00 p.m.
As published by the local station, the young man had attended with three other friends. Two of them got separated from the group and two others—one of the missing—tried to swim across.
The destination, located seven kilometers from Pan de Azúcar, experienced an unprecedented tourist explosion in the summer of 2021. Initially the crystal clear water drew attention that resembled that of a pond in Central America and visits to the place increased as the word spread on social networks, but the authorities quickly warned that it was due to the large amount of chemicals that generated that impression. Mainly, by calcium carbonate.
The quarries are on private property, which thousands of tourists constantly violated and which aroused the anger of the company that owns the place, Compañía Nacional de Cementos (CNC), which has its industrial plant and deposits in Nueva Carrara.
In 2021, several complaints were made for illegal entry and the company warned that it would reinforce the fences to prevent the entry of tourists.
