Justin Trudeau’s administration intends to continue working with its associates in Venezuela and the international community to demand from Canada the release of political prisoners unjustly detained in Venezuela, respect for freedom of expression and denouncing human rights violations in the country.
The Government of Canada issued a release with their position regarding the dissolution of the interim government chaired until January 5 by Juan Guaidó, clarifying that they respect the decisions made within the Venezuelan parliament and that they will maintain cooperation with their allies in Venezuela.
According to the statement published on the Canadian government website, the North American country will maintain its recognition of the National Assembly elected in 2015 which, despite not having the executive body that was on paper the interim government, is seen as the last democratically elected institution in Venezuela.
“Canada is closely following events in Venezuela, including the recent vote by the National Assembly to dissolve the interim government. We respect and recognize Parliament’s decision to extend its authority as the last democratically elected institution. We also respect the decision to change the structure of the interim,” the statement said.
For Justin Trudeau’s government, the main priority is a peaceful transition to democracy, which can only be possible with the realization of free and democratic presidential elections while working to reestablish democratic order and The rule of law.

In this order of ideas, the letter states that Canada fully supports the negotiation process between Chavismo and the opposition that is taking place in Mexico, whose most recent episode culminated at the end of November with the signing of a social agreement that implies the allocation of 3,000 million of dollars of Venezuelan funds frozen abroad, which will be used to finance social projects.
“Canada strongly supports the negotiation process led by Venezuela that is taking place in Mexico City. We urge the parties involved to continue their discussions and take advantage of the recent humanitarian agreements finalized in November 2022 to ensure that a clear set of rules and deadlines are established for free and fair elections,” they stress.
Finally, they affirm that they will work with their associates in Venezuela and the international community to demand the release of political prisoners unjustly detained in Venezuela, respect for freedom of expression and denouncing human rights violations in the country.
