Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI died this Saturday at the age of 95, the Vatican reported.
“It is with regret that I announce that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away today at 9:34 a.m. in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery of the Vatican. As soon as possible, more information will be provided”; he indicated the @vaticannews_es account on Twitter.
On December 28, Pope Francis asked to pray for the health of Benedict XVI. In a tweet he wrote: “#Let’s PrayTogether for Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, who in silence continues to pray for the Church. Let us ask the Lord to console him and sustain him in this testimony of love for the Church, until the end.” After his death, he has not issued a message again.
Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) was a German theologian who shocked the world by resigning his pontificate in 2013.
The funeral will be on January 5 in St. Peter’s Square.
