From November 19 to December 17, 2022, the weekly cases increased fivefold, going from 6,380 notified in epidemiological week 46 (from November 13 to 19) to 25,170 in week 50 (from December 11 to 17).
Hugo López-Gatell, Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, said that, in total, there are eight consecutive weeks with rising covid-19 infections. However, hospitalizations and deaths, he maintained, have not grown at the same rate.
“Fortunately, this situation has remained very consistent, where hospitalizations are increasing at a much slower rate than the cases are increasing,” he said in the morning conference on December 27.

He explained that this is thanks to vaccination, which does not prevent infections but protects against developing serious illness.
Unlike other waves of the pandemic, in the current one, which is already drawn as the sixth, deaths from covid are fewer, said the undersecretary.
Until now, the Ministry of Health reports an average of 10 deaths a day, when at other times they numbered in the hundreds.
