Professor Euclides Tapia on the Russia-Ukraine conflict: ‘A new Soviet Union is being reconfigured’

An eventual military invasion of Ukraine by Russia, as the Western powers have warned, keeps the alarms on in the face of the international impact that this possible military action would entail.

Moscow denies that it has any intention of invading Ukraine, although it has already mobilized up to 100,000 Russian soldiers to the borders with Ukraine, according to US intelligence reports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin claims that NATO (the military alliance led by the United States together with the main European powers) is expanding towards Eastern European countries, including Ukraine, which he considers an “aggression” on Russia’s security .

To understand a little more this conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the professor of International Relations at the University of Panama (UP), Euclides Tapia, indicated that Ukraine is an important point within the geostrategic perspective, it is a bridge between the West and the East. A new Soviet Union is being reconfigured.

“Ukraine cannot be a member of NATO, but it can be a member of the Collective Security Treaty,” he said.

He added that in this situation the European order is challenged. “This situation has been considered normal when it is an open violation of the international order or a provocation,” he specified.
