Government of Chile expresses “alarm” for “situation of human rights and institutional crisis” in Peru

The Government of Chile issued a statement this Friday afternoon in which it expressed its “alarm” for “the situation of human rights and institutional crisis” in Peru, “the same one that was raised by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonia Urrejola to the chancellor Ana Cecilia Gervasi in recent telephone communication”, they indicated.

“Chile deplores the death of at least 15 people, according to figures from the Mission in Peru of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and states that any violation of human rights must be duly investigated,” said the Executive in the text.

In turn, they called for the “cessation of violence and a prompt solution to the crisis, in adherence to democratic channels and international obligations to safeguard human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

Finally, they reaffirmed their “willingness to work together with the rest of the international community, in the corresponding instances or mechanisms, contributing to a process of broad and inclusive dialogue of the different social and political actors in Peru, capable of generating the conditions for a democratic governance based on the sovereign will of the Peruvian people”.

Earlier, Minister Urrejola delivered a statement in the same vein as the Government statement.

“We are extremely concerned about the situation that is occurring in Peru. On the one hand, regarding the Chileans who are stranded there, but we are also very concerned about the human rights situation,” Urrejola said from La Moneda.

In turn, he reported that at least 350 Chileans are stranded in Peru. In this regard, the Foreign Ministry is preparing an action plan.
