KPMG managing partner highlights role of audit committees

Santo Domingo, DR.- The managing partner in the Dominican Republic of the international firm KPMG, Mario Torres, urged to take advantage of the beginning of a new year to review and strengthen the composition of the members of the audit committee of the companies, review the statutes of said body and establish a process of continuous improvement of the corporate governance of the entities.

The executive expressed himself in these terms when pronouncing the central words of a meeting-conversation offered to representatives of business associations and clients of the KPMG firm, which dealt with the best practices related to the structure, agenda and roles that the committee should have audit process to be strategic and efficient.

This meeting was held at the JW Marriott hotel and had as speakers Jesús Luna, lead partner of Private Enterprise and José Carlos Ortíz, corporate governance, internal audit and risk management partner, both from KPMG de México.

Torres highlighted that the KPMG firm is in constant transformation in the business world and that it is at the forefront of financial issues as a way of keeping clients updated so that they can continuously innovate, transform and grow in search of new paths, technologies and perspectives.

While the speakers, Luna and Ortíz, agreed that the role of the audit committee (AC) is evolving rapidly, and as the priorities of the global economy change, it is called upon to focus on the critical risks of today’s world, prioritizing issues such as digitization, disruptions in business models, as a result of the Pandemic.

The specialists specified that the added value of the function of finance, security, the health of company employees, monitoring of environmental, social and corporate governance risks should never lose focus on ethics and of compliance with obligations.

Likewise, the discussion highlighted the importance of a fluid interaction between the board, the audit committee, the senior management of the organizations, the internal auditor and the external auditor.

The Firm, as part of its contributions to clients and relatives, made available to the audience valuable tools such as the audit committee manual developed, in collaboration with the IPADE Business School, and the annual study of the Audit Committee Agenda. 2022, proposal for said internal body, so that the latter serves as the basis for the construction of the 2023 agenda.
