MIAMI, United States. — Every December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated, which this year will address the theme “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in promoting an accessible and equitable world”.
Although in recent decades the Cuban regime has tried to show itself as a champion of the care of citizens with disabilities, the conditions in which people live on the Island invite us to think that the Island, more than a paradise, has become a hell for those who, in one way or another, cannot fend for themselves.
In recent months, complaints from various people with disabilities have emerged alleging abandonment by the authorities of the Caribbean country.
In May of this year, Alberto Pena Mendinuetaa limited physicist who lives in the entrance corridor of a plot in the Diez de Octubre municipality, asked the government for a house where he could lead a dignified life.
“I need to find a place to live because I have been on the street for a lot of years (…) I have been living here for years now. After I divorced the last woman I had, which was when my first leg was amputated, I came to live here,” the man told CubaNet.
Queues, food shortages, lack of transportation, decline in Public Health and problems with the housing fund are conditions that invite us to think about the difficult situation that people with disabilities must face on the Island.

Without one of his legs and in a wheelchair, Rizo Pedroso only receives a monthly pension of 1,540 pesos for his condition. With that figure, clearly insufficient, he must pay for food, hygiene and medicine.
Another case is that of Orlando Lores Sanchez, a Cuban with a disability who lives in Arroyo Naranjo, Havana. Despite exercising a profession, Lords assured this newspaper in August that this title was worthless to him in a country where he could not even feed his two daughters, aged 13 and 14, well.
