Knowledge of the masters of Cuban rum is already a heritage of humanity

The knowledge of the Cuban masters of light rum, knowledge that is transmitted from one generation to another, finally entered the list of the Unesco of what is considered Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

The Intergovernmental Committee of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity supported in its seventeenth session the candidacy called “The Knowledge of the Masters of Cuban Light Rum”, after two days of debates around the proposal, according to a report by Latin Press (PL).

The candidacy reached the Committee with an unfavorable recommendation from the evaluation group, based on technical aspects of the file, which suggested returning it to the country, but members of the body made up of 24 Unesco States -led by Brazil- yesterday promoted a solution on site in the form of an amendment, supported by the clarification of doubts by the Cuban delegation, points out PL.

Yahima Esquivel, Cuban ambassador to UNESCO, highlighted the contribution of the centuries-old tradition to Cuban identity, based on the use of oral, bodily and sensory expressions to transmit from one generation to another the knowledge system of which qualified specialists are repositories. .

It is a process of social practice that occurs on a daily basis in factory spaces or others where teachers interact, who assume the social function of perpetuating knowledge that is not written nor does it constitute recipes. Regarding the values ​​of this tradition, he mentioned solidarity, collective contribution, scientific rigor and good practices governed by ethics and harmony with nature.

Why is Cuban rum good?

Esquivel, points out the Cuban agency, responded to questions, and most of the countries considered the concerns cleared up and supported the status of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the knowledge of the masters of Cuban light rum. Various interventions by members of the Committee insisted that the file does not promote a product, but rather reflects the art of transmitting knowledge between generations, which well deserves to be safeguarded.

In a recent dialogue with PL, members of the Movement of Masters of Cuban Light Rum affirmed that tradition and accumulated knowledge allow the elaboration of a unique product, labeled as the liquid flavor of everything Cuban.

Over the past 160 years, exquisite blends have evolved time and again into refined products that arouse worldwide interest, the fruits of the labor of eight generations of specialists, abounded.

This year, the secret in the preparation of the baguette, “the most popular type of bread that is consumed in France throughout the year”, has also been incorporated this year.

Several Cuban sites yesterday recalled the news of the establishment of the Parrandas de Remedio as a world heritage site, a condition achieved when they were registered in November 2018.
