MADRID, Spain.- The CINTAS Foundation, dedicated to promoting the arts and humanities of Cuban artists, awarded this year its annual scholarships, worth $20,000, to the visual artist Sandra Ceballos, the writer, journalist and editor Armando Lucas Correa , and the musician Rodrigo Castro.
The award gala, which took place on November 13, was broadcast from the foundation’s social networks and was attended by the president of CINTAS, Celso González-Falla.
Sandra Ceballos, awarded in the Visual Arts category, studied painting, sculpture and engraving at the School of Plastic Arts of the San Alejandro National Academy of Fine Arts. Since her graduation in 1983, she has kept working in the field of visual arts, where she has obtained important recognitions such as the Prize at the II Jaume Wash Painting Biennial in Barcelona, Spain.
A well-known feminist activist, she is also the promoter of Perro Residencies, an altruistic project that disseminates the work of artists and curators on the island with few resources.
Armando Lucas Correa, winner of the Creative Writing category, has lived in the United States since 1991 and was editor-in-chief of the magazine People in Spanish. In Cuba, he graduated from the Higher Institute of Art (ISA) and has a postgraduate degree in journalism from the University of Havana.
While Rodrigo Castro, winner of the CINTAS Scholarship in the Musical Composition category, is a composer, conductor and guitarist. Born in Mexico, but of Cuban parents, he completed a Master’s in Musical Composition at Carnegie Mellon University.
In this edition of the CINTAS scholarship, Gustavo Acosta, Luisa María Basnuevo, Hamlet Lavastida and Clara Varas were finalists in the Visual Arts category. In Creative Writing: Ruth Behar, Ana Hebra Flaster, Abigail Santamaría and Emma Trelles. And in the Musical Composition category: Adonis González-Matos and Alexis Rodríguez Martínez.
The CINTAS Foundation was created by Oscar Benjamín Cintas y Rodríguez, a prominent Cuban sugar and railroad magnate who was ambassador to the United States between 1932 and 1934.
Among the winners in previous editions are Andrés Duany, María Elena González, Lydia Rubio, Ana Mendieta, Emilio Falero, Vicente Dolpico Lerner, Hugo Consuegra Sosa, Fernando Díaz Domínguez, Julio Larraz, Ricardo Viera and José Mijares.
