After a troubled year for the local economy, the overall price of Basic Food Basket (CBA) and the Total Basic Basket (CBT) in Argentina again experienced a new increase at the end of 2021, reported this Wednesday the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).
In its latest report, the national institute indicated that, in December 2021, the monthly valuation of the Basic Food Basket suffered an increase of 3.9% compared to the previous month, which has an impact on the price of food. While the CBT rose by 3.0%.
For its part, the year-over-year valuation for Basic Food Basket in Argentina it was 45.3% in 2021 and 40.5% for the Total Basic Basket. So its overall value was $10,668 for the CBA and $24,643 for the CBT, just last month.
Also, by December 2021, a family made up of four members (a couple and two children) needed to receive $76,146.13 to be able to purchase the minimum amount of food products of the Basic basket and thus overcome the poverty threshold.
How much did a family need to overcome the indigence threshold?
According to INDEC data, last month, a family made up of three members needed at least $26,243 to cover basic food expenses and $60,621 to meet other needs, such as medicines, education, transportation, clothing and the payment of public services.
Meanwhile, households of four needed $32,964 to buy food and $76,146 for other expenses. In the case of families of five members, the minimum monthly income would have to be $34,671 to guarantee access to food and $80,089 for other needs.
In its latest measurement, INDEC also confirmed that, During the last quarter of 2021, 40.6% of the Argentine population lived below the poverty line, which translates into 18.5 million inhabitants.
Of this general total, at least 10.7% are within the indigence index, which means that they cannot afford the minimum expenses of the Basic Food Basket and not CBT. This percentage translates into 4.5 million Argentines and Argentines.
