Health system in Colombia, among the 10 most inclusive in the world

There is concern in the health sector about a possible reform of the system

The reform of the health system in Colombia and the constant criticism of it is a constant theme of the country’s political landscape. Since the government of Gustavo Petro there has been talk of the filing of a project in 2023 to transform several things in the sector.

Even the Minister of Health, Carolina Corcho, has assured that the country has the “worst health system in the world”. Along with this, Petro has spoken of the urgency of reforming Law 100, which for him privileges insurance according to the person’s availability of money.

However, the latest Health Index of The Economist newspaper highlights the qualities of the health system in Colombia. The publication of last October 11 takes into account 37 indicators on the tools governments to reduce inequity in these systems and promote inclusion.

In this case, Colombia ranked among the best places. In the first indicator, which evaluates inclusion based on government policies, the country was positioned in the top 10 with a score of 86.9 in 13 indicators that measured health as a priority and right, monitoring system inequities, taxes on alcohol and tobacco, vulnerable groups of the population, healthy consumption guides, among others.

In this sense, Colombia ranked sixth after countries such as Thailand, Canada, South Korea, the United Kingdom and France. Also in the top 10 are Australia, China and the Philippines.

Another indicator that the study took into account is the expenditure of each household for access to healthbearing in mind that the higher the cost, the less inclusive your system is.

Under this measurement, the country obtained a score of 67.9, just 2 percentage points less than Canada and about 4 above the average of the countries in the study. In this sense, Colombia stood out in terms of inclusion in the system and empowerment in policy formulation.

However, its lowest indicator was related to infrastructure and cultural practices. That is, in terms of support for medical personnel, hospitals, case studies, personalization of the service and accompaniment.
