The Ministry of Education said on Monday that it is working to repair four schools whose perimeter fences were destroyed as a result of last Friday’s rains and guaranteed that there will be no suspension of teaching for that reason.

“Only four of them suffered damage to the gates, but work is already under way to repair them,” said the Minister of Education, Ángel Hernández.

The official referred to the Costa Rica schools, in Los Ríos; Doña Socorro and Salomé Ureña, in Los Girasoles and Gregorio Urbano Gilbert, in Pantoja, in Greater Santo Domingo.

The damages caused by the rains in these schools are millionaires, according to the photographic evidence captured in the aforementioned places.

The situation was verified by a commission from the Ministry of Education headed by the Deputy Minister of Accreditation and Teacher Certification, Frank D’Oleo; the director of the Office, Clara Joa; the director of School Buildings, Fernando Taveras and the director of Regional 15 of Education, Rafael Amador Figaris.

“They made a survey of the damage to the campuses,” said that state agency.

“In these centers, as well as in others in the interior of the country, it was observed that the perimeter fences were not raised on the foundations or footings that civil engineering commands, as well as the absence of rods,” said the entity.

The fences were built on marshy land, not recommended by civil engineering.
“It was observed that the perimeter fences were not raised on the foundations or footings that civil engineering commands, as well as the absence of rods,” indicates the report of the aforementioned commission.

“Likewise, they were built on muddy land or on landfills that did not guarantee their sustainability in the face of heavy rains or floods, as happened,” he continued.

Yesterday, Sunday, brigades from the Ministry of Education worked on the construction of provisional fences, so that today, Monday, the students return to the classrooms in safe conditions.

The rains last Friday caused great damage to homes, vehicles, bridges, streets and highways, as well as the loss of human lives.

At least three people are missing, after they were swept away by the rains, which, in some cases, reached the roofs of the houses.

Some families had to get rid of furniture, mattresses and other household items that were damaged by the rains in Greater Santo Domingo.
