The former President of the Republic, Joseph “Pepe” Mujicareturned to the country this Monday after having actively participated in the last days of the campaign for Luiz Inacio Lula da Silvawho achieved victory this Sunday surpassing the Brazilian president, Jair Bolsonaro, who will go down in history as the first president of that country not to be re-elected.

The former president and leader of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP) described Lula as a “off the charts”, and asserted that Brazil is the only country in the world where he has seen “sambando demonstrations” due to the “joyful” culture that characterizes it.

Lula and Bolsonaro

On the ballotage and Bolsonaro’s rhetoric, he reflected: “It was not a political fight between the left and the right. Actually, deep down, it was a political confrontation between democracy and an authoritarian tendency. Why? Because, ultimately, the forms of democracy, the institutional forms, can be maintained, but these institutions can be grossly violated in terms of procedure and that is what was in danger in Brazil. In fact, this generated a policy of alliances of many people who once historically had political rivalries. But Lula, who is obviously out of this world, also faced a state apparatus”.

“There has been a process of transferring public property in various forms to private property that has given liquidity to the Brazilian authorities, part of the course of liquidity has been overturned in this electoral campaign, where there was media in games like never before seen, according to people who know Brazil”, he added.

Regarding Lula and the new reality of geopolitics, he stated: “Lula is very clear that foreign policy is increasingly determining and that we Latin Americans do not exist in the world; and I am sure that it will be positive in regional and world relations”.
