Rule of Law regresses in Mexico: Global Index of the World Justice Project

The Rule of Law in Mexico worsened as data from the Global Rule of Law Index 2022 of the World Justice Project (WJP).

“The collection and analysis of data from 140 countries and jurisdictions, carried out by the World Justice Project, show that adherence to the rule of law fell in 61% of the countries surveyed this year, including Mexico,” he specified.

According to the report Mexico ranked 115th out of 140 countries with a score of 0.42 on a scale of 0 to 1, where 0 is weak adherence to the rule of law and 1 is very strong.

For the 2021 ranking, Mexico obtained a score of 0.43, which placed it in 113th place out of 139 countries measured by the international organization.

“Among its most important trends is the deterioration of the factor that measures order and security. Also, the global trends of the deterioration of the civil justice system and the weakening of non-governmental counterweights such as civil society and the press are observed. To this is added a stagnation in anti-corruption matters, ”said the WJP.

On the other hand, it was reported that Mexico maintains strengths in areas such as open government and respect for the law derived from the transition of powers, coupled with integrity in the elections.

Location in the region

The WJP placed Mexico, compared to the other countries measured in Latin America and the Caribbean, in 27th place out of 32 national measures.

The best performance in the region corresponds to Uruguay (position 25 of the 140 countries surveyed in the world), followed by Costa Rica and Chile. The countries in the region with the lowest scores are Nicaragua, Haiti, and Venezuela (position 140)”, it was limited.

While for income, Mexico is classified in the category of medium-high; here the nation was ranked 39th out of 42.
