Cuban painter Juan Moreira dies

Madrid Spain.- The renowned Cuban painter Juan Moreira passed away this Monday in Havana at the age of 83.

Graduated in 1963 from the San Alejandro School of Fine Arts, where he later taught drawing classes, throughout his career he accumulated twenty personal exhibitions and dozens of group shows.

Their construction site It is exhibited in prestigious galleries in Cuba and the world, including the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba; the Latin American Gallery in Krakow, Poland; the Museum of Cuban Art in Vienna, Austria, the National Gallery of Jamaica, in Kingston; the Museum of the Schools in Gotha, Germany; Saint Thomas University in Houston, Texas; and the Royal Ontario Museum in Ontario, Canada.

In his creation, his work as an illustrator of editions of the The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quijote of La Manchaand his participation in the murals of the Habana Libre Hotel in the capital.

Moreira received the First Prize for drawing at the First Provincial Hall of Visual Arts Teachers and Instructors in Havana (1973); he was Honorable Mention at the VII Kosice Biennale in Czechoslovakia (1984); received the Distinction for National Culture (1988) and the Third Prize in the III Painting Contest of the Nicomedes García Gómez Foundation in Segovia, Spain (2001), among others.

After his death, the also painter and art critic Manuel López Oliva, quoted by the official media of the Island, said: “Death does not respect root makers either, it has just taken away one of the Cuban artists who knew how to fulfill, with poetry and generational roots, the human and expressive mission that life assigned him.”
