Amid expectations and uncertainty as to whether or not the new bill of the Penal Code would be approved, the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, said that he will propose in the session on Tuesday, to leave the controversial piece on the table.
Pacheco offered the information yesterday afternoon through a statement and his Twitter account, considering that despite the fact that it is a very important, delicate and fundamental piece for the development of the Dominican Republic, he does so by virtue of the discussions that have arisen in recent days.
“The Penal Code of the Dominican Republic has been in the National Congress for more than 20 years and waiting 2, 3 or 4 more months I don’t think it is a problem. I understand that it is the best solution at this time, although I consider that we have been doing the right thing, we have not violated any procedure, but we must be prudent when it comes to a piece like this, which is so fundamental to the penal system of the Dominican Republic ”, Expressed the legislator.
The Chamber of Deputies has on its agenda to meet this Tuesday, at 10:00 in the morning, to continue with the knowledge of the bill, whose main proponent is the reformist deputy Rogelio Genao Lanza.
PLD would propose the same
Hours before Alfredo Pacheco’s statement, the spokesman for the PLD deputies, Gustavo Sánchez, revealed to this medium that he would ask the bloc of his party to know the draft of the Penal Code for the next legislature, due to the questions about the piece .
“That the remaining time of the legislature be given so that in the next (legislature) we can already engage with the due consensus, respecting the parties and the differences, without the spirit of procedural confrontation of the regulations or constitutional confrontation; that the Code can be seen in a particular way in its entirety and with the greatest speed ”, indicated the legislator.
Faced with the reappearance of covid-19 infections and the economic crisis that this could generate in the country, the National Congress is preparing to convene for a second extraordinary legislature in order to know and approve loans to alleviate and prevent this situation.
The information was offered by a source to elCaribe, who explained that the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, held a meeting at the National Palace with President Luis Abinader, who made the request.
