Cuban residents in Venezuela ask Biden to relax sanctions

The Association of Cubans and Cuban Residents in Venezuela (Accreven) demanded that the United States Government relax the economic sanctions that it maintains today against the people of Cuba, after the passage of Hurricane Ian through the island.

In an open letter to President Joe Biden, Accreven appealed to the “good offices” of the president to “express the need that, in these complex circumstances, the punitive measures that US administrations imposed on Havana for more than 60 years be made more flexible.” , reviewed Latin Press.

The letter pointed out that the destruction caused by the hurricane as it passed through the west of the country was “as intense as in Florida,” and Cuba needs resources and financing for a speedy recovery.

However, he stressed that “today, the embargo (blockade) makes it impossible or limits the arrival of these resources.”

Ian crossed Pinar del Río soil at dawn on September 26 with category three on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with sustained winds of more than 200 kilometers per hour, and heavy rainfall that caused flooding.

It caused damage to electrical transmission networks, communications, homes, facilities, and agriculture.

Cubans residing in Venezuela expressed to the president “our deepest condolences to the American people, for the loss of life that occurred” during the passage of the meteor through Florida and other states of the Union.

“Here goes our solidarity with the thousands of victims,” they remarked.

Accreven described the inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries that sponsor terrorism as “unfounded”, a decision established in the last days of the Donald Trump Administration and that “seriously affects the Cuban people”, it indicated.

It would be a good step in the right direction for the Caribbean nation to be removed from that “spurious list,” they said, and they considered that “this inclusion causes negative effects for all the people who live on the island.”

We hope that from the trail of death and destruction caused by the hurricane, waves of solidarity rise between the peoples of the United States and Cuba, and that the moment “is an opportunity to bring relaxation to relations between the two governments,” in benefit of both peoples, highlighted the letter.

He also raised the hope that this is a moment in which the foundations are laid for the normalization of relations between both nations, a step that the peoples of one part and the other will appreciate.
