On September 29, a fire broke out in one of the buildings of the headquarters of the Superior Court of Electoral Justice (TSJE), where the voting equipment remained.
According to the TSJE, some 7,700 voting machines were affected, as well as 1,700 netbook electronic devices, 1,950 scanners, 1,500 telephones, among others, the latter used for the Preliminary Results Transmission System (TREP).
When referring to the investigations, Prosecutor Giovanni Grisetti indicated that “in record time” they took almost 200 testimonies related to the incident, which allowed the closed circuit team to be located that would contain the images of the interior of the burned building.
The fire also opened a political controversy, after the president of the TSJE, Jaime Bestard, said that he was evaluating the possibility of dividing the holding of the internal elections of the matches, called for next December 18, which was later ruled out.
During an appearance before Congress, Bestard proposed last Sunday to the legislators that they authorize to modify “for the only time” an article of the Electoral Code, so that they can extend the closing of the tables for two more hours, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
He also proposed a “small increase” in the number of voters per table.
The entrance Electoral Justice building affected by fire inspected was first published in diary TODAY.
